For Our Friends

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:12

In Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights, a cantankerous man who often quotes the Bible to criticize others is memorably described as “the wearisomest self-righteous Pharisee that ever ransacked a Bible to rake [apply] the promises to himself and fling the curses to his neighbours.”

It’s a funny line; and it may even bring particular people to mind. But aren’t we alla bit like this—prone to condemn others’ failures while excusing our own?

In Scripture some people amazingly did the exact opposite; they were willing to give up God’s promises for them and even be cursed if it would save others. Consider Moses, who said he’d rather be blotted out of God’s book than see the Israelites unforgiven (Exodus 32:32). Or Paul, who said he’d choose to be “cut off from Christ” if it meant his people…

VIDEO Vested Interest – “Stand Fast”

Vested Interest

Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

Who needs body armor? Not just military personnel and police officers. An organization called Vested Interest in K9s is suiting up America’s 30,000 police dogs in protective gear. Each ballistic suit can cost up to $2,000, and the charity has cloaked more than 2,900 four-legged warriors since 2009.

As believers, we too have a vested interest protecting ourselves from Satan’s ballistic attacks. One unguarded moment can ruin our testimonies, damage our relationships, diminish our influence, steal our joy, and reverse our spiritual progress.

We have power available to be overcomers in life, with God’s armor and the Holy Spirit to protect and guide us. In the final verses of 1 Corinthians, the apostle Paul told us to keep alert for spiritual danger (watch); to hold our convictions tightly (stand fast in the faith); to exercise…

The seat of faith

Daily Bible Bytes for you

Where does faith reside?

This is a very difficult question to answer. I have ventured into a very difficult topic. I hope I will be able to make some driving points.

The Search

When someone is told to have faith, he or she begins to search for faith within himself or herself.

Unstable bridge

Let me give an example. Suppose we have to cross a foot bridge which wobbles with slight wind. Would you be comfortable with crossing this bridge? I think we will think twice before deciding to take the first step.

Stable bridge

Let us change this scenario, Suppose we have to walk over a strong concrete bridge then we will have no second thought about crossing this bridge. We can walk or run over this bridge because we believe that this bridge is strong one.

Therefore considering both of these scenarios, let us reason out the…

So Why Do Birds Really Sing?

And God created… every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:21)

I am thankful I have found a promise from the God of all grace that deals with the “long term” and the eternal. I belong to a body of plain people who believe the truth revealed in the Bible. These are the people who believe that God in the beginning made the heavens and the earth and all things that are therein.

Yes, these plain believing people will tell you that God created the flowers to be beautiful and the birds to sing, so that men and women could enjoy them. We believe that God made the birds to warble and harmonize as though they were tuned to a harp.

But the scientist disagrees, saying, “It is simply biological. The bird sings only to attract a mate.”

Actually, the God who made…

Trust and Obey

Joshua 6:1-14

One of my favorite hymns is “Trust and Obey” because it sums up God’s purpose for our lives. When we practice these two commands, a beautiful cycle begins. Trusting the Lord makes obedience easier, and obedience produces ever-increasing trust. Can you recall facing a challenge that was difficult or perplexing? If so, you know how important these two commands are.

When the Lord calls you to a task that seems unreasonable, you have two options. You can obey Him even though you don’t understand what will happen, or you can become fearful and attempt to find a way out. Joshua chose the first option. Because he trusted the Lord, he disregarded all his military experience and adopted God’s bizarre battle plan. Over the years, he had learned that the Lord is perfectly trustworthy.

The way we respond to God’s challenging assignments reveals what we believe about Him. We…

VIDEO The Assigning of the Call – The Power of Forgiveness

The Assigning of the Call

We take our own spiritual consecration and try to make it into a call of God, but when we get right with Him He brushes all this aside. Then He gives us a tremendous, riveting pain to fasten our attention on something that we never even dreamed could be His call for us. And for one radiant, flashing moment we see His purpose, and we say, “Here am I! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8).

This call has nothing to do with personal sanctification, but with being made broken bread and poured-out wine. Yet God can never make us into wine if we object to the fingers He chooses to use to crush…
