Navy to close Norfolk college office, shift resources online

The last remaining Navy College Offices in the continental United States are closing their doors Sunday as the service looks to cut costs and move its educational assistance offerings online.

The Navy closed 16 offices this past year after modernizing its Navy College Virtual Education Center, leaving open only one office in each of its four fleet concentration areas: Norfolk, San Diego, Jacksonville, Fla., and Kitsap, Wash.

The Navy has said shutting all of its stateside offices would save about $2.3 million a year, and more than half of that comes from the closure of offices at Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia Beach.

Instead of visiting brick-and-mortar offices, sailors will be directed to a website for college counseling, education planning, testing, tuition assistance and other benefits.
