On the TV screen, he played a former Confederate officer who wandered the West. In real life, he founded an anti-tax group that became the Arizona Patriots.

Actor and activist Ty Hardin died Thursday at the age of 87.

His wife, Carolyn Pampu Hardin, told The Associated Press that her husband had been “in failing health.”

Hardin, who was born Orison Whipple Hungerford Jr. in New York City, starred in the Warner Bros. series Bronco, which ran on TV from 1958 to 1962.
