The non-profit legal group Liberty Counsel sent a letter Friday to Maj. Gen. Eric Wesley based on complaints from a number of service members at the Columbus, Georgia, base.
One year ago, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced transgender individuals would be allowed to openly serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. As a result, the Pentagon directed commanders to conduct face-to-face “transgender awareness” training for all military members and civilians who supervise military personnel.
Liberty Counsel’s letter explains the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the Department of Defense Instructions offer exemptions from “so-called ‘transgender’ directives which violate their sincerely held religious beliefs and conscience.”
