WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A small Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard vessel pointed its weapon at a U.S. military helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, two U.S. defense officials told Reuters on Monday, an action they described as “unsafe and unprofessional.”
The incident is the latest in a series of similar actions by Iranian vessels this year, but the first reported since Republican Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 8.During his campaign, Trump vowed that any Iranian vessel that harassed the U.S. Navy in the Gulf would be “shot out of the water,” if he was elected. Trump is due to take office on Jan. 20.There was no immediate Iranian comment on the incident. Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident took place when a Navy MH-60 helicopter flew within half a mile (0.8 km) of two Iranian vessels in international waters. One of the vessels pointed a weapon at the helicopter, the U.S. officials said.”
The behavior by our standards is provocative and could be seen as an escalation,” the officials said. At no point did the crew of the helicopter feel threatened, they added. It was not immediately clear what type of weapon was pointed at the U.S. aircraft.Years of mutual animosity eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran in January after a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. But serious differences still remain over Iran’s ballistic missile program, and over conflicts in Syria and Iraq.
A number of similar incidents have taken place this year.In September, a U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship changed course after an Iranian fast-attack craft came within 100 yards (91 meters) of it.”When they circle our beautiful destroyers with their little boats and they make gestures at our people that they shouldn’t be allowed to make, they will be shot out of the water,” Trump said at the time.

Reuters names the American ship as the USS Firebolt, a patrol vessel that ABC News says was escorting the USS Eisenhower, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.According to Reuters, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards ship sailed directly in front of the USS Firebolt at a distance of some 100 yards, forcing it to maneuver away.

Are the images satire or bigotry? Designated terrorist group CAIR says they are “Islamophobic” bigotry. These questions are at the center of the controversy surrounding a book called “Bad Little Children’s Books” — a collection of mock children’s book covers that parody hot-button topics like racism and discrimination.CNN One cover titled “Happy Burkaday Timmy!” portrays a girl in a veil holding a ticking present, while another illustrates the “Rockets and Missiles of the Islamic State.”

On Friday, a New York-based rights group announced that an American-Iranian dual national and his wife have been detained in Iran after first being arrested in July. The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran (ICHRI) released the information that Karan Vafadari and his wife, Afarin Niasari, have been held without charge since their arrest by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ Corps and have been forbidden from having access to any lawyers. The pair run an art gallery in Tehran and were said to have originally been held in Tehran’s Evin Prison. Iran does not recognize dual citizenship and has been targeting American-Iranians for persecution for over a year.

The Department of the Army will not approve an easement that would allow the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota, the Army’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Works announced today in a statement. The Army claimed in a statement that Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy based her decision on a need to explore “alternate routes for the Dakota Access Pipeline crossing.”Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell released a statement in support of the decision, saying that the “thoughtful approach established by the Army today ensures that there will be an in-depth evaluation of alternative routes for the pipeline and a closer look at potential impacts.”The Standing Rock Sioux tribe also praised the decision, and thanked both the Obama administration and the many people who supported the effort to stop the pipeline from being built across Lake Oahe.”We wholeheartedly support the decision of the administration and commend with the utmost gratitude the courage it took on the part of President Obama, the Army Corps, the Department of Justice and the Department of the Interior to take steps to correct the course of history and to do the right thing,” Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault II said in a statement. “The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and all of Indian Country will be forever grateful to the Obama Administration for this historic decision.”The news comes on a day when at least 2,000 U.S. military veterans have arrived at Standing Rock amid frigid cold to help battle against the construction of the pipeline. The vets, led by Wesley Clark Jr., son of retired general and former presidential candidate Wesley Clark, began arriving in force today to help protest against the controversial crude oil pipeline project in North Dakota. They joined the months-long demonstration at what felt like a moment of heightened drama: The North Dakota governor had issued an emergency evacuation order for protesters around the site, which follows a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deadline for demonstrators to leave the area by Monday, Dec. 5.But the evacuation order, which could have come with mass arrests, was made prior to today’s statement by the Army.Protesters and their supporters showed little inclination to back down, prior to the announcement this afternoon.Donations to a GoFundMe account launched by Clark in support of Veterans for Standing Rock, a group he claimed would “assemble as a peaceful, unarmed militia at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation,” passed the $1 million dollar mark this morning, coming from more than 24,000 individual donors, according to a page promoting the cause.Standing Rock protesters described the veterans’ mission as serving as a kind of “human shield” between peaceful demonstrators and police. In addition to Clark’s “peaceful militia,” the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights told ABC News on Friday that it would send commissioners to North Dakota to monitor for any possible civil rights violations, as clashes between protesters and law enforcement have at times turned violent.Kelcy Warren, CEO of Energy Transfer Partners, the Texas-based company behind the Dakota Pipeline, has argued that concerns about its potential to pollute water are unfounded. He also wrote in an internal memo to staff in September that “multiple archaeological studies conducted with state historic preservation offices found no sacred items along the route,” suggesting that the construction of the pipeline would not affect Native Americans who live in the area where it is being built.ABC News’ Evan Simon and Catherine Thorbecke contributed to this report.

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the former American prisoner of war in Afghanistan who was freed in a 2014 swap for five Taliban detainees, has asked President Obama to pardon him before leaving the White House to President-elect Donald J. Trump, who has called the soldier “a no-good traitor who should have been executed.”After the presidential election, Sergeant Bergdahl’s legal team submitted copies of a clemency application to the White House, the Justice Department and the Pentagon, according to White House and Justice Department officials. It requested a pre-emptive pardon that would avert Sergeant Bergdahl’s court-martial trial on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy that endangered fellow soldiers. The trial is scheduled to begin on April 18.Sergeant Bergdahl left his outpost in Afghanistan without permission in 2009 and was captured by militants, prompting a dangerous but fruitless search. His captors held him in brutal conditions for five years, including locking him in a cage and in darkness for lengthy periods.

“… Mr. Trump do what you said you would do. You laid out a plan to make America Great Again and enough of us bought into it to elect you to be our president. Now deliver on those promises. Fulfill that vision and watch as the snowflake demonstrators turn into supporters once they learn that these policies will bring jobs, prosperity and the satisfaction of earning your own way instead of riding on the backs of others. If you do this and you will not only Make America Great Again you will go down in History as one of America’s greatest presidents. As the Historian of the Future I can guarantee that with a promise of my own.”

A dentist at the Tomah Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wisconsin exposed nearly 600 veterans to infectious diseases including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, say VA administrators. From October 2015 to October 2016, a dentist at the Tomah VA exposed 592 veterans to infectious diseases by reusing his own dental equipment and “cleaning” it instead of using the sterile and disposable equipment provided by the VA, said Acting Medical Center Director Victoria Brahm, according to WEAU News.
“It was purposeful that he was violating VA regulations,” Brahm said. “During all of the orientation, he used all of our equipment. He used it appropriately, so it was very purposeful from what we found in our investigation that he knew exactly what he was doing, and preferred to use his own equipment against procedure.”Someone who was filling in for the dentist’s assistant noticed what he was doing and reported it.The dentist, who has yet to be identified, hasn’t been fired after carelessly exposing hundreds of veterans to infectious diseases. Instead, he’s been reassigned to an administrative role. The Tomah VA is in the process of notifying all veterans who received dental care at this center over the past year that they were exposed to HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. The VA center is also offering free screenings and free treatment to anyone who was infected by their dentist.
